The Department of Physics of Xianyang Normal University was set up in 1978, when the three-year program of teacher-training in physics. Later electronic technology majors were introduced. In 2001, introduced were three undergraduate majors of physics, electronic information science and technology, and electronic information engineering and two three-year program majors of teacher-training in physics and electronic application technology.
    The department has 54 staff members, of whom 42 are full-time teachers, including one supervisor for PhD candidate, one supervisor for master candidate, 14 professors and associate professors, one advanced engineer, one advanced experimenter. 29 full-time teachers are PhDs or masters and the number of full-time teachers who have middle and higher ranks is 31.
    The Department of Physics has been putting emphasis on scientific research work. Through the introduction of talents and invitation of famous experts¡¯ delivering of lectures, a relaxing and innovative atmosphere for teaching and scientific research is created, which is conducive to the growth of young teachers. Therefore, a group of discipline leaders and academic backbone have sprung up, who have achieved a bumper harvest of scientific research results in their respective fields, winning attractions from their colleagues. Currently there are 22 projects sponsored by national natural science foundation, Shaanxi Province natural science foundation and the university. 8 items of projects have won provincial and municipal awards. The number of monographs and textbooks is 15.
    The number of basic and major labs for the three majors is 14. The facilities in the labs are complete and suffice entirely for the requirements of teaching.
    The Department of Physics takes the fostering of students¡¯ quality seriously and is active in carrying out the goal of talent fostering made by the university by reinforcing practical training, and by encouraging and guiding students to participate in all kinds of public-oriented activities and contests so that students¡¯ sense of participation and competitiveness is to be whetted and excellent students with good moral and intellectual ability are to be fostered. For the past few years, students have won 46 items of prizes including electronic design competition at the national level for college students, mathematics modeling competition at the national level for college students, debate for college students, vocational skills competition for college students, and social practice, etc.
    The graduates of the Department of Physics have been well reputed inside and outside the province. For the past few years, 10% of undergraduates have been enrolled by famous scientific research institutes as postgraduates. The students of the Department of Physics can be employed by work units because of their simple and honest ideological and work style, solid foundation in their majors, and down-to-earth ability in practice. High quality graduates have been well commented by employers.
