Brief Introduction to the Department of ?Chinese Language and Literature 
 
     
 

    Founded in 1978, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Xianyang Normal University is one of the most time-honored departments of the university. When Xianyang Normal University was established, the Department of Chinese was set up be incorporating the Department of Chinese of Xianyang Teachers¡¯ College and that of Xianyang Education Institute. Currently there are 1,202 undergraduates from 23 classes. There are now 7 teaching and research sections in the Department of Chinese, which includes literary and art theory, ancient literature, foreign literature, modern and contemporary literature, Chinese, writing and media science. There is one reference room and one media lab. The department has 74 staff members, of whom 65 are full-time teachers, including 6 professors, 25 associate professors, 32 lecturers and two assistants. The number of teachers who are lectures and above is 63, which account for 96.6% of the total number of full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 3 PhDs and 13 PhD candidates; there are 31 masters and three master candidates. At present, we have formed a teaching team made up of professors, associate professors and lecturers. The structures of age, rank, and educational background are being optimized. For the past three years, one teacher was assessed as ¡°Advanced Model for Teaching Ethics¡±, and four teachers were designated as discipline and academic leaders for the first session, and one teacher was awarded the title of ¡°Famous Teacher¡± of the university. The department-running creed of the Department of Chinese is strict administration, improved quality, and stable development. The department-running thought is a stable development of traditional courses, vehement cultivation of new courses, emphasis on key points, and expansion of advantages with market as guidance, talent fostering as the focal point, course construction as the leader, scientific research as support, and team construction as the key for the deepening of educational and teaching reform and the all-round enhancement of talent quality. The short-term goal is clear positioning, integrated team, orientation determination with scientific research work as a breakthrough for the sooner, quicker and more achievements to welcome the undergraduate teaching assessment of 2007. The long-term goal is the application of the right to Master¡¯s Degree. Through eight to fifteen years, majors of the Department of Chinese are to be upgraded into prominent ones inside the province.
