The Department of Chemistry was established in 1978 and was one of the earliest established departments of the university. Three undergraduate majors were set up, namely, chemistry (set up in 2001), applied chemistry (set up in 2003), and material chemistry (set up in 2006).
There are two collegiate level research institutes of ˇ°Research Institute for Analytical Scienceˇ± and ˇ°Research Institute for Applied Chemistry and New Materialsˇ±. There are five teaching and research sections which include inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and applied chemistry. The major of chemistry was assessed as ˇ°prominent major of Shaanxi Provinceˇ± in 2006. Organic chemistry was assessed as ˇ°classic course of Shaanxi Provinceˇ± in 2005. Analytical chemistry was designated as ˇ°key disciplineˇ± by the university in 2004. Inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and principles of chemical industry were assessed as ˇ°classic course at collegiate levelˇ±. Analytical chemistry, structural chemistry, and chemical technology were designated as ˇ°key course under construction at collegiate levelˇ±. Currently there are 1,096 students on three- and four-year programs, of which 701 are undergraduates. Since the establishment of the department, more than 2,500 professional talents in chemsitry have been fostered for the society.
